I just realized that I spent about a third of my day yesterday cooking, and that is a wonderful thing.
I made pumpkin oatmeal with a pecan streusel topping, potato and spinach curry with cardamom scented basmati rice, bacon jam, and started two loaves of no-knead bread. Today I’ll be making vanilla lattes using my new espresso machine, ginger beer using a Serious Eats recipe, and some interesting-topping Superbowl pizzas by superheating my oven with a cast iron skillet as a pizza stone.
Weekends rule.

I finally got around to doing one of the projects I’ve been meaning to get to for a while: making my own Maraschino cherries. A heavy Manhattan drinker like myself requires a constant supply, naturally, and just a suggestion: never look at the ingredients list on a bottle of them. Gross.

So upon finding the season’s first cherries at the grocery store I decided to make two different recipes. The first, which from what I can tell is the classic, involves pitting, and then soaking the cherries in Maraschino liqueur. I improved upon it (hopefully) by adding some almond extract, since that always seems to be a standout flavor in Maraschinos. The second recipe, from Serious Eats, is more correctly a recipe for brandied cherries, and it involves boiling a syrup with spices before putting everything together in the jar.

I’m going to let these babies marinade for a few days before I give either a try, but here’s hoping!

I spent my day taking photos and cooking (shepherd’s pie and pumpkin cookies). The weather was beautiful, and the leaves look great, so I went to Roosevelt Island to take this shot of Georgetown in the Fall I’ve been setting up in my head as I drive in to work every morning. I didn’t get quite the shot I was thinking of, but I did get a bunch of good photos of the lovely Potomac in autumnal splendor.
Here is Rosslyn, from under the Roosevelt bridge.
Also, I saw a guy wearing a shirt that said “Thoreau Sauntering Society”, and that is awesome.
