2012 stream of consciousness blog #1

It was around the same time in 2011 that I began both listening to the Judge John Hodgman podcast and reading Put This On, and yet it took me until November or December to realize that the creative mind behind both was Jesse Thorn. I’d never listened to The Sound of Young America despite several recommendations from friends, but I’m listening to some today (in its new Bullseye incarnation), and reading about Jesse, and I’m really getting into this whole young public radio worldview.

First of all, the latest episode of Bullseye is an interview with Ed Levine, the founder of Serious Eats - another of my favorite blogs - and it’s really cool to hear him talking about the both “democratic and discerning” audience that reads the blog. It’s an affirmation of the way I consume online media, I suppose, to hear Levine talk about seeking the perfect balance between authority and community, DIY-ism and connoisseurship: “We’re trying to demystify food so people can just enjoy it and know that they can and enjoy the end result!”

Also, I was reading about Jesse Thorn’s semi-serious but certainly living philosophy of New Sincerity and found a corollary to my “death of snark” thesis about emerging cultural trends like My Parents Were Awesome, the mainstreaming of indie film and music, urban homesteading and crafting, and even stuff like Kanye West dressing like this.

And now I’ll invoke the privilege of my stream of consciousness blogging: I’m out of things to say.

Guilty pleasures

To this day I’ll occasionally sneak off to McDonald’s for a clandestine sandwich, guiltily snarfing down the salty buttery biscuit, the gooey American cheese, the weirdly spongy egg patty and the bacon-that’s-not-really-bacon-but-still-delicious.”

J. Kenji Lopez-Alt, food writer and kitchen tinkerer for Serious Eats in a new piece for the website that not only legitimates Griddlemas but also invents a new god-sandwich:

NB: This is excellent to try whilst hungover.”

Notes

Pumpernickel Highball
2 ounces rye whiskey (such as Bulleit)
1/4 teaspoon caraway simple syrup
4 ounces club soda
Garnish: cucumber slice
This is going to need to be made before the summer is over. Or is it more of a Fall drink? Either way, get in my belly.
